  Leah was already opening the cupboard, stretching up to get the Jiffy-Pop from the top shelf when she felt him press her into the counter, pulling her hair aside so he could kiss her neck and shoulder.

  He nuzzled her ear. “I want you so bad, I can’t stand it.”

  The words made her melt and she turned in his arms, her lips meeting his, mouths soft, wet zeal as their tongues touched. His thigh pressed hard between her legs and she squeezed it.

  “I want to stay the night,” she whispered into his ear, pouting, feeling his hands moving behind her, under her blouse, touching skin.

  “I know.” He squeezed her close with a sigh. His hand slipped under the waistband of her skirt, tugging at her panties. “I want you to stay.”

  “I can’t stand not being with you.” She reached between them and rubbed her hand over the bulge in his crotch. There was too much fabric separating them and she strained against it.

  “I know, I know.” He drew a shaky breath and then kissed her again, squeezing her bottom as she rubbed her hand between his legs, creating a delicious friction.

  “Hurry, you guys!” Erica called from the other room and Leah jumped, they both did, moving quickly apart.

  “Popcorn,” he said, as if reminding them both, and Leah turned on the stove, handing him the Jiffy-Pop.

  “Where’s the butter?” she asked in front of the open fridge as he put the Jiffy-Pop on the stove.

  He reached his arm around her, opening a little door on the side. “In here.”

  She caught his arm, taking the butter and turning his hand up to kiss it. He watched her, his eyes following the path her tongue started to make—little circles over his palm, then tracing up toward the soft pads of his fingers. His face looked pained when she took his index finger into her mouth and sucked it gently, rolling her tongue around the tip.

  “Leah,” he whispered, watching his finger disappear into her mouth. “Oh God.”

  And then they were pressed together again, kissing and touching, the soft sounds of their hungry mouths and groping hands lost in the explosion of the Jiffy-Pop. He was grabbing her, lifting her, pulling her into his crotch, and she wrapped her legs around him as he shoved her up onto the kitchen counter.

  “Yes!” She whispered, biting at his neck. “Fuck me, Rob.” The sound of the words, coupled with his name in her mouth, felt so adult, and he looked at her, his eyes searching hers. “Please!” She begged him, squeezing his length, feeling it twitch in her hand. “Fuck me, right here, right now.”

  He groaned, breathless, and pulled back, shaking his head. “Leah… no… we can’t.”

  She sighed as he turned and started straightening, zipping and snapping, and she felt such an incredible longing she was faint with it. She took a knife and cut the stick of butter violently in half, peeling off the paper and putting it into a pot to melt it on the stove while he shook the Jiffy-Pop over the burner.

  “I’m sorry.” He met her eyes when he held the bowl of popcorn out for the butter.

  “You’re right.” She shook her head, pouring it on with a shrug.

  “Daddy!” Erica screamed from the other room, startling them both. “Delk’s just killed Lew and Billy Baxter!”

  Leah grinned, shaking some salt on the popcorn. “You better go save her.”

  He leaned over and nuzzled her ear. “I’d rather save you.”

  “I don’t know if I can be saved,” she replied with a little smile, feeling a twinge of guilt as she headed back to the living room. Erica was squealing at the bloodbath on the screen, half covering her eyes, but peeking out between her fingers. Mr. Nolan sat between them again with the popcorn on his knees and they all reached into the buttery softness at once.

  “Did we miss anything?” His hand brushed Leah’s in the bowl, making her feel faint again.

  Erica started talking, explaining plot points, but Leah was lost already—lost in the hard edge of his jaw as he chewed his popcorn and the way the cuff of his sleeve pulled up to reveal the dark hairs on his forearm and the curved wrinkles around his mouth when he smiled over at her.

  She didn’t know how much of the rest of the episode she actually saw. If someone had asked her to tell them about it, she couldn’t have. When Gunsmoke was over, High Finance came on, and no one felt like getting up to change the channel. Erica fell asleep, curled up in the corner of the sofa, her head resting on the arm.

  “It’s eleven,” he whispered, glancing over at his daughter, who snorted and shifted a little in her sleep. “Did you tell your mom midnight?”

  Leah sighed, nodding. “I don’t want to go.”

  “I don’t want you to go,” he agreed, putting his arm around her shoulders and pulling her close.

  His lips brushed over her forehead, but she tilted her face up to him for more, letting out a soft whimper. He kissed her, just touching his mouth to hers, their lips buttery still from the popcorn.

  “I want you,” she breathed, taking his hand and putting it over her breast. He shook his head, but his fingers found her nipple, making it hard under her blouse as he rubbed it. “Please… we have an hour.”

  “Erica,” he reminded her as she slid her hand between his legs, finding him still hard under the material. When she rubbed there, he shifted, and she felt the length of him straining under his trousers.

  “She sleeps like the dead,” she murmured, grazing her nails over his crotch, arching against his hand. She was so wet her panties felt like they were sticking to her. “God, please… please...”

  Beside them, Erica shifted, sighing, and they both froze. Leah swallowed hard, glancing over at her, and he did too.

  “Take me to bed,” she whispered, begging. They’d never done it there.

  “Okay,” he panted, sliding his hand out from under her skirt. “Let’s go.”

  “I hate you both!” she screamed, and then she disappeared, flying down the ladder, footsteps pounding on the hardwood floor, and they both heard the steel slam of the outside door behind her.

  And just like that, the moment was gone.

  Chapter Twelve

  The world outside was a blur as rain poured down in steady sheets. Leah leaned her forehead against the passenger side window, watching figures moving in soft-focus, dark blues and blacks scurrying together to get inside. No clusters of girls laughing and clutching their books to their chests stood on the front steps today—most everyone had an umbrella and they were hurrying, head-down, toward the front doors of the church.
