  School breaks were supposed to actually be breaks, weren’t they? Melinda swore at her book and shoved it into her book bag¸ leaning back and resting her head on the white cover of her big blue seat, letting her eyes close. The train’s rhythm rumbled through her, a nice buzzing sensation.

  Since she’d made a point of booking a roomette for their freaking endless journey home through the Canadian mountains, she figured she might as well make like her stepbrother, Aaron, and get a little sleep. But her assignment hung over her like a black cloud. What kind of dickhole professor gave assignments over winter break?

  “Thanks for a chillaxing winter break, Dr. Evans,” she muttered.

  “Huh?” Her stepbrother opened one eye. “You say something?”

  “Just regretting taking anthropology.”

  “Again? But mom’s so proud of you.” Her brother ratcheted his voice up to a maddening falsetto. “‘Melinda’s a class mentor now!’ ‘Melinda’s proofreading for the T.A’s!’ ‘Melinda’s figured out a plan for world peace based on the way baboons scratch their asses!’”

  “Shut your pie-hole, golden boy! It’s not like you don’t get any praise,” she snorted. Jeez, he’d earned a frickin’ car with his freshman year grades. “Are you in some kind of trouble?”

  “Not yet.” He fixed his gaze out of the window.

  It was his eyes that drew all the girls to him. Melinda didn’t know where they came from, because his dad had blue eyes. Melinda and her mom were blonde and blue eyed, but not related to Aaron, so that didn’t really count. Aaron’s hair was a dark black mop—his dad’s, what was left of it, was a ring of light brow—and his eyes were a smoky grey that made his whites really white. They had a permanent soft-focus, sexy, smoldering look even models would kill for. Aaron never knew his mother, but Melinda had often wondered if the woman had been some sort of actress or supermodel.

  Right now, Aaron looked so sad, she leaned forward, impatient.

  “Aaron, tell me what’s wrong!”

  “You know how I wanted to do zoology?”

  “Yeah.” She knew how much he was hating animal physiology. It was more about cell biology than animals. “So go talk to your counselor and see what you need to do to switch majors.”

  “Give me some credit, Lindy. I’ve ‘explored my options.’” He used air-quotes to emphasize his counselor’s phrase. “I can’t start over. I’m in my final year.”

  “But—”

  “Oh my God, quit.” Aaron rolled his dark eyes. “Can you imagine my dad’s reaction if I told him I wanted switch majors? And Jesus. I owe your mom enough already, not being her ‘real’ son and all.”

  More air-quotes.

  “Oh come on…” Melinda sighed. Granted, she did kind of like to rub it in that it was her mom who came with all the money, and all the perks that came with the money, but that was only because Aaron loved to brag about his awesomeness like he was all-that.

  “Enough.” Aaron put his head back on the head rest and closed his eyes. “I’m trying to sleep.”

  Shut out, again. She stared out at the Rockies, restless with annoyance. They’d been so close, once. That seemed like a million years ago now.

  Now, even when she tried to be nice, he reacted like she was deliberately trying to be a pest. Maybe he knew she’d seen him jerking off in front of his laptop and was mad at her for spying on him. Or maybe he was freaked out by how dependent he’d been on her after his accident. Whatever, this whole “frenemie” arrangement was getting old.

  That had escalated quickly. To say the least. Lately though, Aaron had become aloof to the point of being contemptuous. And as much as he hated his current classes, whenever they had to go home, he acted like he was being dragged there like a slave in chains.

  Heat rushed to her cheeks and across her chest as her evil imagination put him in a grubby sheet hung low round his hips, hands tied behind his back. She couldn’t look at him for a moment or so.

  When she finally glanced back, she saw he’d dozed off again. As his chest rose and fell, she could see definition through his t-shirt, which was new. Was he wearing it a size too small, or had he bulked up? She glanced at his forearms, which were corded, even at rest. Definitely bulked up. And from the contented look on his face, as his hand travelled to his crotch and shifted gears, he was bulking up for someone in particular.

  His self-improvement left her feeling a little resentful. He was always too busy to hang out with her on campus, but he’d obviously made time to hit the gym.

  “Aaron, are you seeing someone?”

  He gave a lazy grin, not opening his eyes.

  It had been a nice little truce for a while. He even let her shave his stubbly face, because he’d scraped both palms badly in the fall. His idiot girlfriend’s idea of support was sending footage off to ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos,’ hoping to scoop the grand prize. Once Aaron found that out, he ditched her. So Melinda had carried his books, taken him dinner in his dorm, and rubbed Neosporin into the scraped up places he couldn’t reach.

  Thank God, he’d quit with parkour, but seemed to have ditched the memory of the closeness between them that had come with it.

  “So what’s the big deal with this girl?” She eyed him sourly as stretched in his seat, looking really pleased with himself. The dick.

She didn’t remember saving any of them so they must have gone straight to her phone’s memory from a group chat on Whatsapp. She saw Aaron out of the corner of her eye, shifting forward to the edge of the seat. She took a corresponding lean backwards, anticipating his grab. As she hit the back of her seat, she nearly dropped her phone. His expression of complete panic inspired her and she gasped at her screen before clapping her hand ac
