  Chapter 1

  “Dr. Pfeiffer! Lynn Taylor from CNN. Is it true that you got the idea for the ‘Music to My Ears Device,’ or M-TiME, as you call it, on safari in Africa?” The reporter gestured to one of the large diagrams behind Dr. Pfeiffer detailing the new device which could be inserted in the ear like a hearing aid.

  “Actually, yes.” Dr. William Pfeiffer nodded in agreement, a sheepish smile spreading over his face as the crowd murmured their disbelief.

  He supposed it did sound strange, but truth was often stranger than fiction. He enjoyed their confusion and amusement for a moment, reaching for the bottle of water on the podium and taking a swig. The conference room was jammed with reporters and photographers jostling each other for space. It was standing room only. An ASL reporter stood beside his podium signing for the deaf community, which was well-represented in the audience.

  Will adjusted his glasses, cleared his throat, and did his best to make the connection for the media between his safari in Africa and the device he was hoping to test with Hamlen Laboratories that would help the deaf hear again.

  “Well, I was actually on safari in Africa, and I had an interesting safari guide—a twelve-year-old boy who knew the territory like the back of his hand—who was completely deaf. Except, he had discovered a certain roar the lions made that allowed him to hear sound.”

  Another murmur of disbelief from the crowd. Will’s sheepish smile grew wider and he shrugged.

  “I know how it sounds. But it really is true. He said that he’d stopped being a safari guide for a year after he became deaf, but once he discovered his little trick, he kept this sound looped on an iPod and it allowed him to hear again. As you can imagine, being completely deaf out on the savannah as a safari guide would be extremely dangerous.”

  The crowd erupted with light laughter.

  “So, naturally, given my background, I was fascinated by this phenomenon. I began studying the role of neuroplasticity in the vocalization of lions. In the same way marine biologists study the sounds made by whales. And thanks to my safari guide friend, I was able to isolate the phenomenon. I determined there is a subsonic and supersonic harmonic within the roar of these lions that activated the safari guide’s speaking and hearing related neurology.”

  “I’m sorry, Dr. Pfeiffer, but that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.” Lynn from CNN wasn’t having it.

  “I understand.” Will pursed his lips and nodded again.

  He knew how it sounded. He’d hoped to keep the origin of his invention a secret just for that reason, but the project head at Hamlen Laboratories, Dr. Andreas Ratte, had been so enamored with the story, he couldn’t refrain from telling it like it was his own.

  “But I promise you, the science backs up my claim,” Will continued. “From our testing so far, it appears the harmonics are different for each individual. But we are able to isolate those harmonics and when we calibrate the device, it can help develop new neural pathways that bypass the damaged neural paths. Our studies show that the development of these new pathways can be done more easily in children, like my safari-guide friend. Of course, the neural pathways of adults are more complex and tend to be more fixed. But we hope it can be done in adults as well.”

  “Dr. Pfeiffer! Dr. Pfeiffer!” The crowd erupted again, seeking his attention, questions at the ready. Will pointed to a short blonde woman who was practically invisible amongst the taller reporters.

  “Thank you, Dr. Pfeiffer. Nigel Sheffield from the BBC. Can you give us some idea of the time frame about bringing a related product to market?”

  “Oh, I can answer that question best for you.” Dr. Ratte, who was standing by with the rest of Will’s team, stepped up to the podium, pushing Will out of the way.

  Will didn’t argue. Ratte was his boss, after all. The thin-lipped man adjusted the microphone for his shorter stature, speaking confidently to the press. He somehow always had a shrewd look on his face, like he was constantly keeping a secret. He ran a hand through his hair, slicked-back and black, practically preening.

  Will joined his team, standing aside to let Ratte lead. He didn’t like being in the spotlight. The place he shined was in the lab. That was his home. Research was his passion. He’d spent so much time in the lab these past five years, his fat, orange tabby cat, Galileo, hardly recognized him. And his grandmother, who still worried that calling New York from Minnesota would cost her long distance on her cell phone, complained he never called her back, and when was he going to meet a girl and settle down and maybe give her a great-grandchild or two?

  But Will didn’t have time for anything else. Hamlen Laboratories had given him the opportunity to develop something that might help deaf children and maybe even adults.

  I just wish Michael could have benefitted from my work.

  It was his one regret. His brother, Michael, had been born deaf. He had been a pure joy to be around. Michael was ten years younger than Will, and the younger boy had idolized his older brother. They had learned to sign together. Michael was bright and had a delightful sense of humor.

  But Michael also had cystic fibrosis. He’d struggled to breathe his entire life, spending much of it on oxygen. When Will was twenty and Michael just ten, his younger brother had caught pneumonia. The doctors hadn’t been able to do anything for him and his brother had died.

  It was a long time ago now, but he didn’t think he’d ever really gotten over it.

  Dr. Ratte continued to answer questions, enjoying the spotlight, and Dr. Pfeiffer let him, even when the questions began to veer into Will’s lane. Thinking about his brother had him thrown off and he was a little emotional. It was better not to have to talk to a crowd full of people.

  Before he knew it, the press conference was over, and he was glad to make his escape amidst handshakes and congratulations.

  Chapter 2

  “Fully funded.” Dr. Ratte looked a little too smug for Will’s taste but he, too, was glad they had gotten the funding they needed. “We can probably go to market within the year!”

  “Perhaps.” Will took a drink from his plastic cup, glancing around at the kids and families eating and drinking at Hamlen Laboratories’ expense. Will was surprised Dr. Ratte had decided to have such a large launch party to celebrate, inviting all the Hamlen employees and their families to a company picnic featuring clowns, magicians, jugglers and even mimes. The man was normally a skinflint, but he was clearly gleeful about the success of Will’s device.

  “No doubt.” Ratte wrinkled his nose in distaste at Will’s hesitation. He looked genuinely like his namesake. Will almost expected the man to have a tail hidden under his dark gray suit. It was a ridiculous thought that made him smile.

  Ratte took that as acquiescence and smiled back. “We’re going to make a billion dollars.”

  “And help a lot of people.” Will made a point of reminding the man of the real reason that Will had developed the device in the first place.

  His gaze fell to a little blonde girl signing to an older dark-haired boy. Will was flu
ent in sign language and saw the little girl was asking him to come play in the enormous bouncy house Ratte had rented for the occasion. The boy shook his head, speaking to her instead of signing. The little girl’s shoulders slumped.

  She was the reason he did what he did, he thought. Kids like her. Kids like his brother, Michael. What a miracle it would be to give her the gift of hearing.

  “Of course, of course.” Ratte agreed with a perfunctory wave of his hand. The man glimpsed someone across the courtyard, and he acknowledged him with a nod. Will saw that it was Dr. Wesler, the president on the board of Hamlen, and knew what was coming next.

  “Would you excuse me, Dr. Pfeiffer?”

  “Certainly.” Will nodded, watching Ratte scuttle over to suck up to Wesler.

  He saw that the little girl had gotten herself an ice cream cone and was licking around and around the chocolate surface, unmindful of the mess she was making all over her face, the melting ice cream dripping down the cone onto her hands. He looked around, wondering who she might belong to.

  There were plenty of families signing and lip-reading in the crowd. Most of Hamlen’s work involved the health of the hearing impaired. It was the primary reason he’d taken a job here right out of medical school. Like Will, many of Hamlen’s employees were connected to hearing issues on a personal level.

  Will went over to the ice cream station and pulled several napkins from the dispenser before heading over to where the little girl sat at an empty table. He set the napkins on the table in front of the girl, taking a seat beside her.
